General:
Perennial herb from well-developed rhizomes, often matted; flowering stems 20-60 cm tall, smooth below, glandular-hairy above, with red or purplish glands.
Leaves:
Basal leaves round with kidney-shaped base, 2-8 cm wide, about 3/4 as long, 15- to 29-toothed, the teeth coarse, sharp, up to 7 mm long, fringed; stalks several times longer than blades, with stipular bases; stem leaves lacking.
Flowers:
Inflorescence open, spreading; petals white, 2-spotted, round to elliptic, 3-4 mm long, abruptly narrowed at base, deciduous; calyces lobed almost to base, free hypanthium absent, the lobes oblong-lanceolate to oblong-egg-shaped, 1.5-2 mm long, bent back, often pinkish or purplish; stamens 10.
Fruits:
Capsules, 6-10 mm long, usually purplish; seeds brown, about 1 mm long, with several lengthwise rows of thick, scale-like pimples.
Notes:
Hybridizes extensively with S. lyallii in S BC. vol5_3

Habitat / Range

Wet streambanks and moist shady places in the montane and subalpine zones; frequent in SW BC, rare northward; E to AB and S to NM, AZ and CA.
